How to Replace Clickbait YouTube Thumbnails in Chrome

Guide scope: SBlock YouTube Clickbait Remover on supported YouTube pages in desktop Chrome.

To replace supported YouTube thumbnails with real video frames, open SBlock YouTube, go to Focus, and enable Focus Mode and Clickbait Remover. Choose the point in the video used for the replacement frame, then reload YouTube and review the result. This changes supported preview images in your browser; it does not edit a creator's upload.

Use the dedicated SBlock YouTube Chrome extension, not regular SBlock. The official listing showed SBlock YouTube 0.2.3 when this guide was checked. Regular SBlock is the separate product for other supported websites.

The cover is an original conceptual illustration of thumbnail replacement, not an extension screenshot or a before-and-after test.

What Clickbait Remover changes

A thumbnail can be a useful preview, but it can also be an edited image rather than a frame you will see during playback. YouTube's official thumbnail guide explains that creators can use generated suggestions or upload a custom image.

SBlock YouTube offers a different viewing choice: use real video frames for supported thumbnails and adjust the point used to select the frame. The current SBlock YouTube feature page lists Clickbait Remover as available now.

Think of the replacement as another clue about the video, not a verdict on its accuracy. One frame might show a title card, a transition, an introduction, or an unrepresentative moment. It cannot prove that a title is honest or that every claim in the video is true.

Replace YouTube thumbnails in Chrome: the steps

  1. Check the product. Install or enable the official SBlock YouTube extension in the Chrome profile where you watch YouTube.
  2. Check site access. Make sure it is permitted to work on youtube.com. Google's extension-management guide explains where to review permissions.
  3. Open YouTube. Keep a normal YouTube tab active and open SBlock YouTube from Chrome's Extensions menu or its pinned icon.
  4. Open Focus. Enable Focus Mode and Clickbait Remover. Review the other Focus controls first and leave unwanted hiding options off. Labels can vary with the extension's language and version.
  5. Choose the thumbnail point. Use the control for the point in the video from which the replacement frame is taken.
  6. Reload and compare. Check several supported preview images, then open a video to see whether its frame helped you make a better choice.

Change only this setting first. If you also hide recommendations or change your watch limit at the same time, it becomes harder to tell which control changed the page.

If your build offers a coverage choice, keep it on YouTube-only for the setup described here. This guide checks YouTube pages, not thumbnail replacement on embedded videos elsewhere.

The purpose is not to promise that every thumbnail will be replaced. Coverage can depend on the page surface, available frames, and changes to YouTube's layout.

Choose a useful frame, not just a different picture

Start with the current thumbnail-point setting and inspect the result. If many replacements show introductions or title cards, try a later point. If a later point gives away the ending or shows closing credits, move it earlier.

For example, a cooking tutorial's opening frame may show its presenter, while a later frame may show preparation or the finished dish. A hiking video may reveal the actual trail instead of an edited promotional image. These are examples of how to evaluate a frame, not promises about a particular video's result.

Keep reading the title, duration, and channel name. A preview image is only one piece of context, and no single thumbnail point is ideal for every video.

Thumbnail replacement is not recommendation feedback

Changing what a thumbnail looks like is different from telling YouTube which videos you want recommended. Clickbait Remover should not be treated as a way to erase watch history, unfollow a creator, or submit account feedback.

If the problem is a repeated topic or channel, use YouTube's own recommendation controls, such as Not interested or Don't recommend channel where offered. Those choices address recommendations rather than the preview image.

If you want fewer recommendation surfaces on the page, our separate Focus Mode guide explains hiding supported Shorts, comments, and recommendations. If the issue is time spent watching, use the Daily Limit guide. You do not need to enable all three tools to replace thumbnails.

If a thumbnail stays unchanged or looks unhelpful

  • Confirm the setting. Check that both Focus Mode and Clickbait Remover are enabled in SBlock YouTube, rather than a similarly named option in another extension.
  • Confirm the profile and access. Settings in another Chrome profile are not proof that the feature is active in this one.
  • Reload the page. An already-open tab can still show its previous page state.
  • Try another thumbnail point. A dark frame or title card can be a poor preview without indicating that the setting failed.
  • Check for a narrow conflict. If another extension also rewrites YouTube thumbnails, pause only that competing feature for one comparison, then restore its previous setting.

If the problem persists, use the SBlock issue reporter. Include the product name SBlock YouTube, installed version, public page URL, and what you expected the thumbnail to show. Remove account names, private recommendations, and other personal details from screenshots.

YouTube's page structure can change. An unchanged thumbnail on one surface is not enough to claim that every replacement has stopped working, and a cleaner image is not proof that advertising or tracking has been eliminated.

Turn thumbnail replacement off again

Open SBlock YouTube, return to Focus, switch Clickbait Remover off, and reload YouTube. Check the page again. You do not need to reset unrelated preferences or uninstall the extension to reverse this choice.

This guide covers thumbnail replacement, not title rewriting, sponsor skipping, or changes to the uploaded video. The official feature page still marks the AI Segmenter suite as coming soon; it is not the feature used here.

Frequently asked questions

Does Clickbait Remover identify every misleading video?

No such guarantee is made. It offers real-frame replacements for supported thumbnails. A frame can help you assess the video, but it is not automatic fact-checking.

Will creators or other viewers see my replacement thumbnail?

This is a browser-viewing control, not a YouTube Studio edit. It does not upload a new thumbnail to the creator's video.

Does it work in the native YouTube mobile app?

This guide is for SBlock YouTube in desktop Chrome. It does not describe changing thumbnails inside the native Android, iPhone, television, or console apps.

Is this the same as blocking YouTube ads?

No. A video's preview thumbnail and a paid ad are different. Thumbnail replacement does not prove an ad was blocked. For sponsored search placements, see our SBlock YouTube search-ad guide.

Start with the official SBlock YouTube extension, change one setting, and choose a frame that helps you decide what to watch. Keep the choice easy to reverse.
